Window Treatments 2

window drapesThis is the second in our series on easy and inexpensive window treatments.  This week we will give the instructions for another drapery using tiebacks for the mounting brackets and thumbtacks.

The draperies in this bedroom were made from 2 swag panels—no sewing, no hemming—just hang the brackets, thumbtack and you’re done.

window drapesStep #1 — Hang the brackets.  The top of the bracket should be 6” from the outside and 1” above the window.  Because very little or no part of the bracket is seen—you can use whatever you have on hand or inexpensive brackets or tie backs.

Step #2 — Put rubber bands around one end of both of the swags, leaving about 6” extending beyond the rubber band.  Arrange the ruffle at the ends so that both sides of the rubber band are nicely gathered.  Find the middle of the window and thumbtack the ends of both swags just above the window and close enough together to give the appearance of a bow.

Step #3 —
Pull the swags to the outside of the window and lay them over the bracket so that they drape to the floor.  Pull the top of swag tight and thumbtack it at the top and slightly outside the bracket.  Fold the top of the swag under about an inch and thumbtack in several places parallel to the top of the window.  Arrange the folds in the drape and even each side.

Step #4 — Make a knot around the bracket by starting at the outside. Bring the swag toward the middle of the window, up around the hook on the bracket and down through the fabric you just pulled across the hook. Fan out the knot into soft folds and straighten the vertical part of the swag so it hangs in soft folds.

COMPLETE!!   Now wasn’t that easy.  The great thing about this type of drapery is that it is so versatile. Because it is made from a straight piece of fabric it can be recycled for any size window in your current or future home.
  • You can adjust the amount of swag by loosening the knot and pulling more fabric over the window.
  • You can make floor or window length drapes.
  • You can use one swag on a sliding glass door
  • Or to drape two narrow windows that frame a bed or other piece of furniture
