Wondering About Weevil

Here is Diana's Question:

I am having a terrible problem with weevil and have thrown away a lot of food.  I have looked on the internet and done what they said (putting a book of matches and bay leaves in things),but it is not helping.  Do you have any suggestions?

Mary Ann's Reply:

For those of you who don't know, weevil is already present in most of your grains.  It just hasn't hatched yet.  I have found that dry pack canning your grain and pasta products is the best way to keep weevil from hatching. The oxygen absorbent pack that you place in the can, will eliminate the oxygen that the weevil need to live.

If you choose to keep your dry products in plastic buckets instead of dry packing them, freeze the dry product for a couple of days when you first purchase it.  This kills the flies, the larvae and the eggs that are present.

If you already have weevil, freeze the product a couple of days and then sift out the dead weevil.  Use a flour sifter for flour and a colander for whole or rolled grains and pasta.  The flower sifter will catch the weevil and let the flour go through the screen.  The colander will catch the grain and let the weevil go through.  Either way you separate the dead weevil from the product.

I thank Diana for writing in.  Questions like this one keep me on my toes and help all of us survive the frustrations that often come new experiences.  If you have questions, post them below or on our CONTACT US page.
